Why Is My AC Frozen? Ice on AC Lines & Coils Explained

Ice on an air conditioner in Texas heat seems backwards, but it's a common problem with a few usual causes.

It sounds strange in San Antonio heat, but frozen air conditioners are one of the most common summer service calls. If you see ice on the copper line going into your outdoor unit, or frost on the indoor coil, here's what's going on, and what to do.

What to Do Right Now

  1. Turn the thermostat from Cool to Off.
  2. Set the fan to On (not Auto) to help melt the ice faster.
  3. Put towels near the indoor unit, melting ice can overflow the drain pan.
  4. Wait for all the ice to melt completely, which can take several hours.

Running a frozen system can damage the compressor, which is one of the most expensive parts of your AC. Don't try to chip the ice off.

Cause 1: Low Airflow

The most common cause. If not enough warm air moves across the indoor coil, it gets too cold and freezes. A dirty filter, closed or blocked vents, or a failing blower motor can all restrict airflow. Start by replacing your filter (see how often to change your AC filter).

Cause 2: Low Refrigerant (a Leak)

AC systems don't "use up" refrigerant. If it's low, there's a leak. Low refrigerant makes the coil run too cold and ice over. A technician needs to find and repair the leak, not just top it off.

Cause 3: Dirty Evaporator Coil

Dust and buildup on the indoor coil act like insulation and can lead to freezing. Regular tune-ups keep the coil clean.

Cause 4: Drain or Fan Problems

A clogged condensate drain or an indoor fan that isn't running properly can also contribute. If you also see water pooling, read AC leaking water.

If it freezes again after you've changed the filter, call or text 210-376-8546. We're open 24/7 and can usually find the cause on the first visit.

Preventing It Next Time

Change filters on schedule, keep vents open, and get a yearly tune-up. Our maintenance plan includes two tune-ups a year. If your AC is older and freezing keeps coming back, it may be time to compare repair costs with a free replacement estimate.
